We're adapting our META design tools to be used by Ara module designers.
Project Ara aims to develop an open hardware platform for creating modular smartphones. These phones will let you mix and match hardware parts, such as cameras or screens. It would allow users to swap out malfunctioning modules or upgrade individual modules as innovations emerge, providing longer lifetime cycles for the handset, and potentially reducing waste.
Our role in Project Ara is to empower developers to design, test and build hardware modules for the Ara mobile platform. Designers will be able to synthesize their design, evaluate design trade offs, and prepare a technical data package for assembly. We aim to engage new breeds of developers with limited experience in hardware design, similar to how mobile platforms inspired a host of new, non-traditional software developers.
